Union Wants Removal Of Abandoned Aircraft | Pulse Nigeria

The aircraft salvage company was formed in 1953 and currently uses a portion of the airfield for commercial airliner salvage. As the story goes, the founder Harold Jenkins "Jenks" Caldwell Sr. was in a restaurant and noticed a part of the building was constructed out of a portion of a U.S.

Army C-54 transport fuselage. Fascinated by the plane, he purchased the airframe and removed it from the building. Caldwell obtained the necessary parts and built a fully functional aircraft for commercial service. His intention was not to sell the plane but instead to create his own small airline.

Over the years, the airline grew to include DC-8s and 707s. Eventually, the company transformed into a salvage operation, selling parts of the various aircraft to private and commercial companies. In the case of the 737-200 registered EY-534, Jubba Airways had operated the 35-year-old aircraft until it was eventually left at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta Airport (NBO).

The jet appears to have flown with Afghanistan's Kam Air in 2007 before moving to Tajikistan's East Air in 2008. Data from Planespotters.net indicates that the jet was withdrawn from use and stored at NBO in 2012. This aircraft will have a starting bid price of

$3,655.10. In the case of our 'featured' Boeing 707, this 54-year-old quadjet registered J5-GGU sustained substantial damage to its undercarriage when landing in Mombasa. Operated by Safari Airlines, The Aviation Safety Network notes that the aircraft's undercarriage contacted landing lights while on final approach to the runway in 2009. Despite a safe landing, the jet's right-hand main gear collapsed as it taxied to the apron.

The list of over 70 aircraft is incredibly diverse- and something we will include in full ((with pricing) at the end of this article. Considering the original value of each aircraft and the amount of financing needed to operate an aircraft, we can imagine

There's even a 707-300! All of these aircraft have some seriously, seriously, low starting bid prices. Let's see what you could get for less than the price of a beat-up used car. If the bid price is lower than the deposit amount, the bidder will be refunded the difference upon presentation of the receipt.

However, if the bid price is higher than the deposit, the bidder will need to pay at least 25% of the total value, with the remainder to be paid within 24 hours. If payment cannot be made, the sale will be canceled and the deposit forfeited.

Authorities looking to get rid of the craft must navigate a bureaucratic maze first, according to El País. If tax authorities can't find an owner, then the state bulletin will publish three notices about the plane, searching for the party willing to claim the wayward aircraft and pay back taxes on its years-long parking space.

If nobody is found after a waiting period of a year, the plane gets auctioned off. The current market rate for an MD-87 is close to $5 million, despite the line of aircraft being manufactured in the 1980s, Gizmodo notes.

Items not collected within two weeks will be forfeited. Also at NBO are two An-24s previously operated by the Somali Air Force. Despite research efforts by Garowe Online, it is unclear why the two aircraft have been sitting in Kenya.

In 2016, my obsession with the forgotten and abandoned inspired me to create this blog. My goal is to showcase the obscure, sometimes historic, forgotten places I have visited across the Southeast. I hope to preserve the past through documentation and photographs since many of these amazing places are often lost to neglect, demolition, or renovation.

I released my first book, Abandoned Birmingham, in July 2018 and it is available worldwide through most major booksellers.
